Free Radicals and Antioxidants - Should you be concerned?

The basic requirements for life may be killing you: the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat.

What goes on in your body every second.
We have trillions of cells in our bodies which carry on thousands of chemical reactions every second. These ongoing chemical reactions cause a transfer of electrons from one molecule to the next. Oxidation occurs when a molecule releases an electron. Reduction occurs when a molecule receives an electron. The process of oxidation and reduction, also know as respiration, is life at its basic elements. The final step in this process is when the electrons combine with oxygen to form water and release carbon dioxide. Enzymes are utilized in this process to control and reduce the temperature for these reactions.

Scientists now know that free radical damage is at the very root of everything from wrinkles to frightening degenerative diseases like arthritis, cancer and heart disease.

Watch this short Video about Free Radicals

Free radicals cause oxidative stress in our bodies, substantially damaging other molecules and cells. Free radicals have now been linked to many degenerative diseases and is known to be the prime factor in the aging process.  You can protect yourself from disease and slow your aging process <Click Here>.

So, what’s the problem?
Well, this whole process of respiration, leaves behind a destructive trail of remnants know as free radicals. These free radicals are formed as electrons are passed on from one molecular structure to the next. Even though they have a life-span that is measured in nanoseconds, these mutable molecular remnants cause havoc in the cells; damaging the membrane, altering the DNA and destroying proteins and lipids. Scientists have now proven that excessive free radical formation in cells can be caused by environmental exposure to pollutants such as car and industrial emissions, industrial chemicals, agricultural pesticides, cigarette smoke, fried foods, ozone, excessive exposure to sun light, certain drugs and chemicals, radiation, infections and a host of other things found in today’s environments.

Study finds residues of pesticides in 53% of baby food samples.

"The most important medical discovery of the last half century concerns two substances called 'free radicals' and 'antioxidants'. Free radicals have been linked to (at last count) about 60 diseases ... we now have evidence that antioxidants can stop and  (in some instances) even reverse the damage done by free radicals." -- Dr. Robert D. Willix Jr., Healthy at 100: 7 Steps to a Century of Great Health --
You can control free radical damage in your body by using pharmaceutical grade, PDR listed, antioxidant formulas  <Click Here>.

What can I do?
Remember we spoke of enzymes controlling the temperature for the oxidation-reduction process. Well, antioxidants are essential to the production and maintenance of  these enzymes and cofactors and are the bodies defense mechanism to ward off the formation of destructive free radicals. If our cells have sufficient antioxidants, the damage can be neutralized; insufficient levels of antioxidants onset a destructive oxidative process which is now believed to be the root cause of over 60 degenerative diseases. Antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, coenzyme Q10, selenium, zinc, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid, n-acetyl-cysteine, proanthocyanidins, bioflavonoids, among others, are now considered free radical scavengers. While our bodies produce some of these antioxidants, many must be obtained through our diet. A successful free radical battle requires the full army of antioxidants, they work most effectively as a group. No single vitamin or mineral can win the battle alone.

U.S. Department of Agriculture reveals that only 1% of our children are getting the required nutritional recommendations for the 5 basic food groups (fruits, grains, meat, dairy and vegetables). 16% of the study group did not meet any of the recommendation.

"Vitamins, if properly understood and applied, will help us to reduce human suffering to an extent which the most fantastic human mind would fail to imagine." -- Dr. Albert Szent-Györgyi, PhD, Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine --

Do I need to supplement? I eat my 6 servings of vegetables everyday and have a well balanced diet and I exercise regularly.

Watch this short Video - The Need to Supplement

That’s a good start! While many of us strive to maintain a good healthy diet, quality nutrition and optimal health cannot be obtained from commercially processed food which is grown in nutrient deficient soils. This in itself has been a growing problem over the last 50 years. Our soils are lacking many of the essential micro-nutrients and food processing methods are destroying large percentages of the remaining nutritional value.

Unfortunately, many of us do not maintain a well balanced diet. We eat too much junk food. We are too sedentary; we are spending too much time watching TV, playing video games, working and playing on our computers, etc. As a result, obesity and childhood diseases are at epidemic levels.

The only way we can maintain our health and fill the void in our nutritional intake is to exercise, eat a well-balanced diet and consume quality nutritional supplements.

If you could increase your life span by 5 years and maintain your health, would it be worth the effort and money to take daily supplements?

"The evidence is now irrefutable that the right use of antioxidants can prevent and reverse many forms of cancer, heart disease, atherosclerosis, adult-onset diabetes and a host of other diseases whose primary cause is excess (free radical) oxidation." --Dr. Michael Colgan, The New Nutrition: Medicine for the Millennium --

I've heard that vitamins are a waste of money.
Some may still want to refute the overwhelming scientific evidence that nutritional supplementation is beneficial in sustaining healthy cells. There are currently many double-blind, placebo-controlled studies underway. It will take time to complete these studies and evaluate the results. However, numerous other studies have consistently concluded that nutritional supplementation is the key to minimizing and preventing free radical damage. A scientific study performed in California reported the death rate for nutritional supplement users was significantly lower than non-users. Males had a  22% lower risk of death, females had a 46% lower risk. Another recent large-scale Canadian university study found a 69% reduction in ischemic heart disease and a 47% reduction in cardiac related deaths among long-term consumers of nutritional supplements. The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society  reported significantly higher levels of antioxidants and lower levels of free radicals in the blood of 100+ year old seniors as compared to people who were 20-30 years younger. Existing scientific evidence is irrefutable; nutritional supplementation is the key to maintaining cellular health.

Independent study ranks the top 100 vitamin supplements

A recent independent Canadian study reviewed 197 children's nutritional products from Canada and the U.S. Only 115 of these products provided sufficient nutritional detail to be considered for further evaluation. The final criteria identified 100 products which were subjected to complete graphical analysis. Click here to see the children's rankings. This same study was applied to adult nutritional products. 254 products out of 440 qualified  for complete analysis. Click here to see the adult rankings. For more information regarding these studies go to www.macwilliam.net.

All Supplements Are Not Created Equal

We know that daily vitamin and mineral supplementation is required to maintain optimal cellular nutrition. However, impurities in many supplements can be more harmful than good - purity is paramount. You typically get what you pay for. Look for products that surpass the highest standards for quality, purity and guaranteed potency. These products will show compliance with U.S. and Canadian Good Manufacturing Processes (GMPs) for pharmaceuticals.  Verify that the products are formulated to meet USP standards for full disintegration and dissolution. Potency should be guaranteed for a specified shelf-life. Highest quality products will be listed in the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR). Beware of products that are delivered in a single dose (a once-a-day tablet simply cannot provide the level of potency needed for optimal nutrition without being too large to swallow). Ingredients should be in the most bioavailable form (mineral salts are not as well absorbed as chelated minerals or minerals bound to an organic carrier).  The products should be independently tested and guaranteed for potency and safety. Determine if the product is manufactured in-house or contracted out to the lowest bidder!  If your product meets all these criteria, you know that you have a nutritional supplement of exceptional quality. If it doesn't, keep looking.
